What Are Natural Coloured Diamonds?
Each DiamondAir™ diamond promises between a minimum of 57 and a maximum of 150 precise facets, in round and fancy shapes in natural coloured & white diamonds. While the 57 facet round diamond is the perfect brilliant-cut 2 billion-year old slice of carbon, the 150 facet is the newest, most perfect option in round diamonds for a mature, collector of the fine things of life. The 150 facet DiamondAir™ round diamond is a hero of the finest minds in the world of
Cut
The only key component controlled by man to bring out the life or face-up appearance of the diamond. Every diamond facet acts like a tiny mirror that refracts and reflects light to create a face-up appearance. To contribute to these interactions, the proportions, polish and precisions of facet placement are crucial, also known as the finish of the diamond, as every angle and polished facet affects the amount of light returned or lost.
These cut grades are assessed based on the cut quality on one of these five grades: Excellent (Ex), Very Good (VG), Good (G), Fair (F), and Poor (P). Better the cut grade, the more valuable the diamond.
Clarity
Diamonds are formed naturally in extreme strained conditions. Rarely does nature produce perfect crystals of extraordinary quality. The degree to which these clarity characteristics are visible under ten times magnifications affects its clarity value, considering their size, number, nature, position and contrast or visibility.
The diamond clarity is assessed based on 11 categories.
Flawless: That shows no inclusions or blemishes.
Internally Flawless: A diamond that shows only insignificant blemishes.
Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2): Diamonds with minute inclusions that are extremely difficult to very difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10X magnification.
Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2): VS diamonds contain minor inclusions that range from difficult to somewhat easy for a trained grader to view under 10X magnification.
Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2): Diamonds under the SI category contain noticeable inclusions that are easy or very easy for a grader to view under 10X.
Included (I1, I2 and I3): Inclusions are apparent and usually quite visible to the unaided eye.The fewer imperfections, the more desirable and the more valuable the diamond is. Inclusions in diamonds block or interfere with the passage of light, therefore, affecting their brilliance.
Colour
Apart from being colourless, diamonds are also available in a spectrum of colours.
These diamonds are assigned a colour grade starting from alphabet D to Z, with D representing colourless and continuing downward to Z, which displays light yellow. Each colour grade will have an impact on price. The levels in colour grades are:
-
Colourless (D-E-F)
-
Near Colourless (G-H-I-J)
-
Faint Yellow (K-L-M)
-
Very Light Yellow (N to R)
-
Light (S-Z)
Diamonds that display colour outside the normal colour range are termed Fancy-coloured and are graded separately as: Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Dark, Fancy Deep, Fancy Vivid.
Carat
Is a metric unit of measurement for diamonds and other gemstones. One metric carat (ct) corresponds to 200 milligrams, or 1 gram equals 5 carats. Carats are further subdivided into 100 points. Therefore, a diamond can be referred to or written as 25 pointers, ¼ carat, 0.25 carat - all the same weight.

The rarest of rare diamonds, for the rarest of rare taste in fine living.
Here is a short primer of this segment of how we grade these marvels of nature:
Colour
Diamonds that exhibit any colour face-up beyond the normal colour range of D-Z on a diamond colour scale are called Fancy colour diamonds. The colour classification for fancy colour diamonds is on three different axes.
1) Hue: The first primary impression of the colour of the diamond-like red, blue, green, yellow, and brown.
2) Tone: The intensity of darkness or lightness of the colour.
3) Saturation is the uniformity of the colour within the diamond.
C. Krishniah Chetty Laboratory Grading System for Fancy coloured diamonds:
The colour scale system: Faint, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid.
How does a diamond get its colour?
The colours of fancy-coloured diamonds come from the absence or presence of certain elements present within the diamond crystal. The yellow colour of a diamond is due to the presence of nitrogen molecules. The blue colour is caused likely due to the presence of boron. In nature, when diamonds are formed or deposited closer to natural radiation sources, a colourless diamond can turn green. These fabulous rare diamonds come in almost every shade of the colour spectrum. In order of rarity (most rare to less rare): red, blue, green, pink, purple, yellow and brown. Every colour is nevertheless candy to the eyes!
Cut
Don’t bother too much about the cut in this segment. It’s purely colour, colour and colour!
Clarity
Don’t bother too much about the clarity of the stone in this segment. It’s important, but it is again purely colour, colour and colour!
Carat
Certain carat weights in coloured diamonds exhibit better colour in bigger sizes and are worth collecting as they show well when set in jewellery, specially as centre stones.
Expression of colour
C. Krishniah Chetty we describe colour based on well recognised terminology in the diamond fraternity – when a colour is not one shade (which is mostly the case) as a combination of two or more colours are visible in a fancy colour diamond, such colours are described as an adjective for the first colour and a noun for its second colour (i.e., Greenish Yellow, purplish pink, yellowish brown, brownish yellow and so on). The first colour represents the modifying colour, and the second is the primary colour. Diamonds with pure colours without any modifiers are rare and expensive.
Value
Every fancy colour diamond is unique, while their quality and price depend significantly on the colour. Diamonds that exhibit stronger pure or singular colours are more valuable than those with a faint or secondary colour. When buying colour diamonds, it is more on your personal taste, your own appeal, your favourite shape in a diamond (although availability is always low), visible inclusions inside (to a lesser degree), and the design of the jewel that makes a powerful impact on your friends, when they see you wearing the rarest of rare !

The Argyle mine in Australia was the primary producer of coloured diamonds in modern times. The mine was closed in 2020-21 for commercial production. The various other mines producing diamonds or other minerals do bring us a small selection now and then, quite sporadically. C. Krishniah Chetty does offer a selection of fine stones and crafts them into stunning jewellery.
