GOLD

Carat refers to the unit of weight by which gems are measured, abbreviated as "Ct", and Karat is the unit of measure for the purity of gold abbreviated as "K" or "KT".
You cannot tell the difference between white gold and platinum just by looking at it. Today, we use advanced surface finishing technology that makes white gold and platinum look the same. However, all platinum in India is stamped with the Pt symbol. Jewellery without the Pt symbol should be suspected and tested. Platinum jewellery is available with authorised jewellers and comes with an authentic platinum certificate.
A) Malleability: Where gold can be hammered into any shape or made into a thin sheet without breaking.
B) Ductility: Drawing gold into thin wires or tubes.
When people exchange their gold for new it is called recycling of gold. Gold is rarely wasted.
When you wish to change old jewellery into new designs, gold is frequently recycled.
Refining of gold refers to the removal of alloy traces such as copper, silver, and other metals to obtain pure gold.
Yes. It's called Aqua Regia: A mixture of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3) at a ratio of either 3:1 or 4:1. Unscrupulous home to home "polishers" use this solution to rob you of the gold on the pretext of polishing your jewellery. We advise that you do not fall prey to such home visiting agents.
The process of assembling individual items, soldering them and giving a pre-finish to the product is called bench working. This is the way hand crafting of jewellery is made in our jewellery crafting studios.
Hallmarking is a way to test gold jewellery and to guarantee the purity of the gold or silver. This is done by licensed testing centres mandated by the Government of India, Ministry of Consumer Affairs. There are over 200 centres in India today. This falls under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
COD is a payment by cash or UPI when the courier delivers the item to you at your address. At present, we do not offer COD facilities.
Pure gold is used to make coins or gold bars.
When gold is mixed with other metals to make it harder and suitable for normal wear.
A) Enhance the strength of gold.
B) Improve workability of gold.
C) Adds colour to gold.
D) Gives different karatage saving money for you as a consumer.
By Indian law, only purity above 10 KT may be considered as gold.
Gold purity is measured in Karats.
A) Gold is malleable and ductile - these properties allow it to be crafted into beautiful jewellery.
B) Gold is rare and a good store of value.
C) Gold will not rust and so has better value than other metals.
Purity of gold = parts of gold per 1000 parts of the product. Therefore 24 Kt gold = 24 parts or 99.5% or 99.99% of gold. 22 Kt gold = 91.67% or 22 parts out of 24 parts containing gold. 18 Kt gold = 75% gold or 18 parts of 24 parts containing gold.
The process of attaching one gold piece to another using a different precious metal alloy is called soldering. Soldering is a very essential process in jewellery manufacturing.
A solder is a filler material which is used in joining (fusing) of precious metal parts.
A) Melt at slightly lower temperature than the material to be soldered.
B) Be made up of the same Karatage as that of the material to be soldered.
Indium and Tin, other than the precious metal itself.
C.Krishniah Chetty Group does not support the use of cadmium in solder, as it is detrimental to the health of our craftsmen. We are 100% environmentally conscious and responsible.
Removing the surface roughness and making the product shiny is called polishing.
Any jewellery contains a mixture of gold and other metals. One needs to understand this in order to determine the karatage and value of the gold they are buying.
A) Destructive Method, also called the Fire Assay method. This 'destroys' the jewel into a lump of homogeneous metal making it easy to test the purity consistently.
B) Non-Destructive Method - XRF or X-Ray Fluorescence method of testing, which is non-destructive, faster and easier than the fire assay method. It is slightly less accurate as it penetrates only the top layer of the jewel.
A spectroscope determines the composition of metals which are present in the jewellery. These are shown as wavelengths by the computer.
A) Sandblast or Matt finish
B) Satin finish
C) Shiny/Mirror finish
D) Milligrain finish

The South African Krugerrand in 1967 pioneered the idea of a coin that contained an ounce of pure gold, and was made to trade just for its gold value. C Krishniah Chetty Jewellers offer you a host of beautifully crafted gold and silver coins.
Both yellow and white gold have the same purity, the only difference is appearance. However, yellow gold is known to be more permanent, while white gold may turn yellow after a year or two of wear. Platinum is a good choice for daily wear, if you prefer a white-gold like look.

DIAMOND

A diamond is entirely made up of carbon, just like the graphite in a pencil. However, the carbon in a diamond is formed in the cubic crystal structure, making it the hardest known mineral.
Diamonds are mined in various ways. Open Pit Mining involves excavating diamond-rich deposits. Alluvial Mining recovers diamonds from river beds, while Marine Mining extracts diamonds from sandy coastal areas through dredging.
A rough stone is first mapped, cleaved, polished and faceted to attain its brilliance, size and shape.
The 4C's of a diamond are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight.
Diamonds are graded on a scale from D-Z. D is the highest grade and represents a totally colorless diamond, while Z indicates a diamond with a noticeable tint of color.
Diamonds come in a range of colors including Yellow, Brown, Black, Green, Blue, Pink and Red. We sell various diamond colors, although some rare colors are not easily available.
Gases like nitrogen and boron get trapped in the diamond crystal structure during formation, which contribute to the color of the stone.
A rough stone is cut to maximize its yield. The process includes selecting the shape and cut grade. Stones with excellent proportions, symmetry and polish receive excellent cut grades.
The Ideal Cut is based on specific proportions for a round brilliant diamond proposed by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. It creates the best balance of brilliance and dispersion. CKC offers this as an exclusive offering.
Melees: Color range DEF and GH with clarity IF-VVS. Solitaires: Color range D-J with clarity from Flawless to VS2. Cut grades range from Excellent to Very Good with excellent proportions and symmetry.
The round brilliant shape is the most popular diamond shape. However, the preferred shape depends on individual customer choice and style.
Diamonds are available in various shapes including Round, Emerald, Princess, Trillion, Oval, Pear, Marquise, Radiant, Asscher, Baguette, Briolette and other special cuts.
A standard round brilliant diamond has 57 facets, or 58 facets if it includes a culet.
Fire refers to the flashes of rainbow colors seen when light passes through a polished diamond.
Brilliance refers to the flashes of white light reflected from a polished diamond.
Scintillation refers to flashes of light emitted from a diamond when the stone, light source, or observer moves. Brilliance, Fire and Scintillation together are called the "Life" of a diamond.
CKC offers 9 standard diamond cuts along with selected special cuts: Round, Marquise, Pear, Princess, Heart, Oval, Emerald, Baguette and Trillion.
Clarity refers to the degree to which a diamond is free from blemishes and inclusions. It is graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I).
Inclusions are internal clarity characteristics enclosed within a polished gemstone. Examples include crystals, feathers, cavities, chips, twinning planes and bearded girdles.
Blemishes are clarity characteristics found on the surface of a diamond. Examples include scratches, abrasions, rough girdles, polish lines, pits, nicks, burn marks, surface graining, naturals and extra facets.
Carat is the unit of weight used for diamonds and gemstones. One carat equals 200 milligrams or 0.200 grams. The word originates from the Carob bean, which was historically used for measurement.
This depends on individual preferences. Some customers prefer larger stones, while others prefer colorless or flawless diamonds. However, cut is considered a major factor as it determines the life and brilliance of a diamond.
A diamond should always be purchased from an authentic source. For larger diamonds, CKC provides an in-house diamond report along with certificates from reputed laboratories such as GIA, HRD or IGI.
The four C's - Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight - together determine the value of a diamond. A smaller diamond can sometimes be more expensive than a larger one depending on its quality grades.
A certified diamond comes with a grading report that describes its quality based on various parameters including the 4C's, measurements, angles, fluorescence and diamond plots.
Certified diamonds come with official grading reports that provide assurance of quality. With uncertified diamonds, customers rely only on the seller's description of the stone.
Diamonds are mainly produced in countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Congo, Australia, Canada and Russia. India was historically the only source of diamonds until the 18th century.
Simulants are gemstones that resemble a more valuable gemstone but do not have the same properties. The most common diamond simulant is Cubic Zirconia (CZ).
Synthetics are laboratory-created stones that have the same chemical and physical properties as their natural counterparts.
Hearts and Arrows describes a perfectly symmetrical and well-cut diamond. When viewed through a special viewer, eight hearts and eight arrows can be seen due to the precise alignment of diamond facets.
A Hearts and Arrows diamond indicates excellent symmetry. A Triple Excellent (3EX) diamond has excellent cut, polish and symmetry. A Hearts and Arrows 3EX diamond represents the finest quality in cut.
Clarity enhancement refers to any process used to improve the apparent clarity of a diamond, including filling fractures or cavities using glass or resin.
Yes, diamonds can be treated or enhanced to change their color. However, CKC does not sell treated or enhanced diamonds.
Yes, although diamonds are the hardest minerals, they are not the toughest. A diamond can chip or break if struck in the right direction.
Diamonds are rare because approximately 250 tons of rock, sand and gravel must be processed to produce one carat of diamond. Only a small percentage of mined diamonds are of gem quality.
Blood Diamonds, also known as conflict diamonds, are diamonds mined in conflict areas where proceeds are used to fund violence. CKC sources diamonds through legitimate channels that follow the Kimberley Process to ensure they are conflict-free.
Yes, carat weight affects diamond price, but the other 4C factors also play a major role. A smaller diamond with better cut, color and clarity can cost more than a larger diamond.
No. Diamonds are available in many colors including Pink, Blue, Red, Green, Grey, Black, Champagne and Cognac. These are known as fancy colored diamonds.
Most inclusions in diamonds cannot be detected by the naked eye and can only be identified under 10X magnification.
It is difficult to differentiate a natural diamond from a synthetic or simulant without proper testing. At CKC, diamonds undergo strict quality checks and customers can be assured of complete transparency.
Diamonds can be mounted using metals such as Yellow Gold, White Gold and Platinum.
Diamonds are expensive because gem-quality diamonds are extremely rare. The complex mining process and limited supply contribute to their value.
The best way to clean diamonds is by using an ultrasonic cleaner or a special jewellery cleaning solution. Regular inspection and cleaning at CKC is recommended once every year.
Common diamond jewellery settings include Prong, Bezel, Tension, Channel, Flush and Pavé settings. Each setting gives the jewellery a unique appearance.
Synthetic diamonds are laboratory-grown diamonds with the same chemical composition and crystal structure as natural diamonds formed over millions of years.
Dhosham refers to black or dark-colored inclusions in a diamond. At CKC, diamonds are carefully selected to ensure they do not contain black or dark inclusions.
A standard 10X fully corrected triplet loupe is used to view diamond inclusions. CKC's diamond grading department also uses microscopes with higher magnification for quality selection.
Rough diamonds are diamonds in their natural raw form before they are cut and polished.
A GIA certified stone is a diamond examined and documented by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), one of the world's leading authorities in diamond grading.
A plot is a graphical representation of a diamond's inclusions marked on its grading certificate.
A diamond is associated with the planet Venus and is traditionally believed to benefit artists, performers, writers and those involved in creative fields.
Yes, diamonds are durable and can be worn every day with proper care and maintenance.
CKC buys back diamonds at the prevailing market rate. Exchange offers provide full value, while direct purchases are offered at 20% less, provided the diamonds were purchased from CKC and are in good condition.
For diamonds between 0.01 to 0.22 carats, CKC guarantees DEF and GH color ranges with Internally Flawless to VVS clarity and excellent cut and polish. Diamonds above 0.22 carats are issued individual diamond reports or certificates.
Yes, larger diamonds can sometimes be repaired through re-polishing. The process may take 1–3 months and is available for diamonds purchased from CKC.
A solitaire is a single diamond that is generally above a quarter carat in size. All CKC solitaires are certified by reputed third-party laboratories.
High-quality diamonds are not considered unlucky. At CKC, diamonds are carefully selected for quality and customers choose them based on their preferences and beliefs.
CKC sources diamonds from leading diamond-producing regions including South Africa, Canada, Russia and Australia. They are selected based on strict standards for color, clarity, proportions, finish and symmetry.
The original Jagersfontein Blue Jager mines in South Africa have been closed for many years. Today, diamonds with faint to medium fluorescence are often considered Blue Jager diamonds.
Our diamonds continue to be cut in Belgium and are produced according to high-quality standards.
Even the smallest diamonds used in our jewellery are full-cut diamonds with 57 or 58 facets. They are not diamond dust or chips and are graded with the same quality standards as larger diamonds.
Small diamonds are also full-cut diamonds with 57 facets and are selected using the same strict standards for color, clarity, finish and quality as larger diamonds.
Diamonds are found in countries including South Africa, Botswana, Russia, Canada, Australia and parts of South America. Diamonds are mined across several countries on four continents.
Yes. Although diamonds are extremely hard, they are made of carbon and can burn when exposed to extremely high temperatures under suitable conditions.
Diamonds are valued for their beauty, rarity and symbolism. While their value may appreciate over time, diamonds are generally purchased for their emotional significance rather than as an investment.
Treated diamonds are diamonds that have been altered from their natural state to improve clarity or change color. Treatment processes enhance appearance beyond normal cutting and polishing.
Yes, fancy colored diamonds are highly popular today. Pink and intense yellow diamonds are among the most sought-after colors.
Fancy colored diamonds are diamonds that display noticeable color intensity outside the normal colorless range. They are available in colors such as Pink, Blue, Green, Yellow and Red. Red diamonds are among the rarest.
